“Reading is the best way to escape into a world of fun and fantasy. As a child I enjoyed many stories that let me dream, and I am eager to encourage youngsters to use their imaginations in the same way,” said the 18-year old Rose Queen.
The Library thanks the Tournament and the 2008 and 2009 Queens, Dusty and Courtney, for their assistance and participation in creating these beautiful READ™ posters. |
READ™ POSTER FEATURING JOCKEY AARON GRYDER AND CAPT. SPARROW The Arcadia Public Library’s newest READ™ poster, featuring jockey Aaron Gryder and the four year old colt Capt. Sparrow was unveiled in the Winner’s Circle at Santa Anita Park on Friday, December 28.
| “The staff at Santa Anita Park is thrilled that we could assist the Arcadia Public Library in putting the new READ™ poster together,” said Pete Siberell, Director of Community Service & Special Projects at the racetrack. “People forget that Arcadia has its own set of professional athletes right under its nose in the Santa Anita jockey colony,” Siberell went on to say. “Pound for pound, jockeys are the strongest and fittest men and women in sports. The Library’s new ‘poster boy,’ Aaron Gryder, is as talented as they come, and one of the sharpest guys in the jockeys’ room. I can only assume that a lot of that comes from reading. In fact, I have heard Aaron is such a voracious reader that the race official has to grab the book Aaron is reading in the starting gate so that he can get the race started!” Co-starring with Aaron on the poster is Capt. Sparrow, a talented colt hot on the racing circuit in Southern California. The thoroughbred is trained by Matthew Chew, whose wife Candace is Director of Print & Graphics at Santa Anita Park. Ms. Chew was instrumental in helping with the printing of the poster for distribution to the Arcadia Public Library and each Arcadia Unified elementary school. |

Arcadia Firefighters Promote Reading
This Arcadia Public Library READ™ poster was unveiled in February 2005 in the Jerry Boadwell Children's Room. This poster features Arcadia Fire Chief David Lugo and a group of Arcadia firefighters in front of a fire engine, each holding their favorite children's book about firefighting.
Arcadia firefighters have long had a special relationship with the Children's Room at the Arcadia Public Library. In 1976, the Children's Room was named in honor of Captain Jerry Broadwell, the first Arcadia firefighter to die in the line of duty. The Arcadia Firefighters Association built a wonderful puppet theater for the Library in 1997 and firefighters annually participate in Read Across America Day in March. Janet Sporleder, Director of Library and Museum Services said, "This special READ™ poster gives us a chance to promote reading and to celebrate the special relationship that Arcadia firefighters and the Library have long had and for which we are very grateful."
