FAQs about the Online Databases and eResources: - What is an online database?
An online database is an organized source of rich information containing thousands of full-text materials that previously were only available in print. The information found in these databases may include magazine and newspaper articles, encyclopedia articles, almanacs, or pamphlets. The articles have been stored in a digital format so that you can easily search them using keywords, subjects, authors and titles. - Why does the Library subscribe to electronic databases?
The Library subscribes to these databases to give you 24/7 access to copyrighted information that is not usually found for free on the Internet. - Why should I use a database instead of just using Google or some other search engine?
If you’re a frequent Internet user, you may find that websites are charging for viewing a complete copy of just the very information or article that you need. You may find conflicting or incomplete information since anyone with a computer and some web skills can put just about anything they want up on the Internet. By subscribing to these databases, the Library is providing you with a wealth of solid information in electronic format just as it continues to do in the more traditional way by purchasing books and other materials for you to consult or check out for home use. - How do I get started using the Online Databases?
Just click on one of the links at the top of this page for the online database you choose and you will be redirected to the instructions for accessing the database from within the Library or from outside the Library. From within the Library, access is automatic and library card login is not required. To use the databases remotely, from home or work, have your Arcadia Public Library card handy and follow the instructions provided for each database on how to type in your Library card barcode letters and numbers. - Can I setup an RSS Feed for any of the databases?
Our Gale databases, which include General Reference Center Gold, Health and Wellness Resource Center, Opposing Viewpoint Resource Center, Literature Resource Center, and Business and Company Profile ASAP, now have new and improved search alert functionality. This means that you can sign up to have notices sent to either your email or rss-feed aggregator whenever new articles are added to the database that meet whatever search criteria you have previously defined. It's a great tool for staying current with topics without having to continually re-enter a database and re-run searches, and it's easy to find the option: just look at the top of your search results for an orange link that says "Create a Search Alert." For example, if you are interested in Los Angeles real estate, do a search in Business and Company Profile ASAP. At the top of your search results click on the "Create a Search Alert" link. Fill out the requested information, and the next thing you know you will start to receive notices in your inbox or rss-feed aggregator whenever new articles about Los Angeles real estate, in any of potentially hundreds of periodicals, are added to the database. Problems Accessing eResources or Online Databases from Home - Check to make sure you are entering your library card bar code correctly: 1 Using or not using capital letters depending on the instructions for the specific database 2 Entering all the characters of your library card bar code including the "parc" prefix 3 Not putting in spaces between any part of the library card bar code - Check to make sure the firewall on your personal computer isn't blocking access.
