Dedicated to supporting the Library by providing state-of-the-art equipment, furnishings, and innovative new programs.
A history of making our Library a better place
The Arcadia Public Library Foundation began as the vision of the late Jesse "Van" Vanlandingham. In 1994 the Arcadia City Council approved funding for the Library's renovation and expansion; however, funds for furnishings were not included. As a member of the Library Board of Trustees, Mr. Vanlandingham realized the need for the essentials that make a Library an inviting and useful place. And the Foundation was born.
The original goal was to raise $1.2 million for chairs, tables, desks, shelving, cabinets and study carrels. By the time the "new" Library was finished in 1995, the Foundation had reached its goal, and beautiful new Library facilities were opened to the public.
Beyond the beginning
Following the 1995 Library project, additional support was necessary for such equipment as computers, aids for disabled and preschool children, and video projectors. The Foundation provided funds to satisfy those needs.
Since over 50,000 visitors come to the Library every month, some items purchased in 1995 have required refurbishing. The Foundation has been quick to respond, maintaining the pleasing environment of the Library.
The Vanlandingham Memorial Garden, adjacent to the south wall of the reading room, was made possible in 2001 with donations to the Foundation.
The need continues
The Library of today contains not just books, but also exciting new technology that makes mind-expanding research and inquiry possible.
The Foundation provides funds for upgraded audio-visual equipment and materials, online databases for the Library's website, and also such innovative programs as a concert series. In addition, the Foundation continues to honor its commitment to replace or refurbish furnishings and maintain the attractive and up-to-date appearance of the Library.
The Foundation
A Board of Directors, composed of at least seven individuals, meets quarterly to manage, supervise and control the business, property and affairs of the Foundation, a non-profit and tax-exempt corporation.
