Refuse and Recyling: Refuse and Recycling programs are essential to ensuring that the City remains clean and safe. In addition, refuse and recycling are necessary to comply with state law AB 939 which requires that all cities in California divert 50% of their trash away from landfills. Residential Refuse Collection The City contracts with Waste Management Inc. to provide automated waste collection and curbside recycling for residents. There are 3 different carts designed to make waste collection and recycling more convenient. In addition, Waste Management provides four (4) free bulky item pickups per year for each single family residential account and two (2) free bulky item pickups per year for each multi-family residence. Bulky items include furniture, large kitchen appliances, used hot water heaters, electronic waste and extra green waste. Trash pick-up day for all residents in the City is Wednesday. However, if a holiday falls on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, then trash pick-up will occur on Thursday. Recycling Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: This slogan represents the perferred method of waste reduction activities: Reduce the amount of waste you create, Reuse items rather than throwing them away, and if you cannot reduce or reuse the waste, then recycle it. Single-family: residents of single-family homes can recycle by using their blue and green carts (see the section "Refuse Collection" above). Multi-family: residents of multi-family buildings can simply dispose of all their trash in one bin. Refuse from multi-family buildings is taken to the Commerce Refuse-to-Energy facility where it is tranformed into electricity. Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) HHW: Arcadia is now offering its residents free curbside pickup of their HHW by directly picking up their waste at the door! Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) is any substance containing ingredients that could negatively affect your safety, health or the environment. Items include but not limited to:

Set up appointment and designated area for curbside pickup with Curbside, Inc. by calling 1-800-HHW-PKUP (449-7587). Operators are standing by 5:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Operator will explain the program, mail a HHW Kit, and discuss the types of material that will be eligible (Those who have special needs may request assistance in gathering the waste within their household) to be placed in the HHW Kit for pickup. On collection day, personnel will arrive at your house, locate the Kit, and deliver it to be properly disposed/recycled.

Universal Waste includes items containing mercury such as thermostats, flourescent lightbulbs, and batteries. These items are HHW and should be disposed accordingly. Electronic Waste: includes all electronic appliances and can be recycled by scheduling a curbside pickup with the City's residential refuse hauler, Waste Management, by calling (800) 266-7551 and request a bulky item pick-up. Sharps Waste: includes needles, lancets, syringes and similar medical instruments. The City provides FREE mail-in sharps kits to residents.
